The advantage of talking multiple languages Have you ever been in Turkey, France, Spain or Italy?
They are beautiful countries. The people are nice and hospitable. But there is one barrier that can make it almost impossible to have a conversation with the natives and that is language.
Language makes it possible for us all to communicate, you have to agree with that. We all tend to think that if you talk English , you can go anywhere on the planet. Nothing is further from the truth .
Talking from my own experience , very few natives speak English. Of course when you stay at a hotel , you will find that the people at the reception and some of the employees talk English fluently. But once you try to have a chat with the people that clean the rooms or maintain the garden, you discover that language is a barrier.
I too experienced inconveniences this way. And one day I decided, that wherever I would travel to, I would learn the native language. Even if my knowledge of the language was just basic, it appeared to be sufficient during my trips.
Back in 1999 I travelled to Turkey. I had no knowledge of the Turkish language. I knew how to say hello:Merhaba, but not enough to have a fluent conversation.
It felt so uncomfortable and I did not try to travel to the mountains, because I was afraid that the people there would not understand me.
So, the next year I ordered a course and pretty well managed to learn the language. During my next trip to Turkey I had the intention to go to the Mountains. When I arrived at a place called Selge, again I discovered that the people there did not speak any other language than Turkish.
Some of the younger men talked some basic German, but I did not have a clue of what they were talking about.
So this was my challenge and after the first words that came out of my mouth, I saw their eyes wide open. They actually could not believe that a foreigner talked their language. That gave me a good feeling and I learned so much about those people and their habits. I even had a good genuine Turkish meal and they explained to me everything that was on my plate.
That experience told me that talking multiple languages has huge advantages. No barriers anymore.
I developed this habit of learning languages and now, also thanks to the internet, I talk 7 languages. Not all of them fluently, but I manage to go wherever I want.
